Comfortable atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, community outreach, welcoming to all and kid friendly … if they don’t have what you’re looking for they will find it for you! What more could you ask for in a bookstore?!

Books & Mortar is a wonderful bookstore! They have a terrific selection of fiction and non-fiction books. Their recommendations and displays are always carefully curated, relevant to current events, and show a diverse array of authors and subjects. They also host a number of book clubs with different themes that are great for finding a community of bookworms. Events at Books & Mortar are always informative and community-driven. A great place to buy books locally and to discover new reads.

This was the first indie bookstore I visited when we moved here a year ago, and it's still my fav! The curation has the right amount of what's trending with what's important to feature. I always add a few to my TBR after a visit :)

I wondered in Books and Mortar from out of town for Indie Bookstore Day. Asha was so inviting and easy to talk to. Shout out to local GRPS Board elect José Rodriguez who was demonstrating screen printing, honorable mention to Lexi! The book selection 10/10, the literary accoutrement 🔥, the people 🫶. I can’t wait to make Books and Mortar my local store when I move to Grand Rapids.

This store was STRAIGHT.... well.. not straight but like HECKIN VIBES!!!! I got an extra free space stamp from them, and adore how they are part of the fight for humanity. They deserve allllllll the nerdy book business to fund all of it. <3 All humans deserve the right to exist and they understood the assignment. Next time I'm in Grand Rapids I am TOTALLY swinging by, and I'm gonna tell the influencer coming to town about y'all too (if I get to talk to him and don't muck it up like every human interaction ever.... lol)

I didn't have the money to buy any books today. I usually don't buy physical books- I like to put books on my E-reader. I come into books and mortar when I need a new perspective and fresh recommendations. The curation is phenomenal. I don't always know what I'm looking for when I come in, but I somehow always find it. The books are not only objectively good, they are picked out with love and care. I feel like I owe the store at the very least a review since I'm not the paper book type. Love and care is hard to come by, and it's something to treasure.

Second time at Books and Mortar. I told myself I’d just do a lap, maybe flip through something, keep it simple. That lasted… not long. Indie Bookstore Day, the place had that steady movement to it. People picking things up, putting them down, picking them back up like no one’s noticing. You can feel when it goes from “just looking” to “alright, this is coming home with me.” I picked one up like it was nothing, just something to hold. Then a few steps away, another one started looking back at me a little, so now I’ve got two, and I’m leaning into the shelf reading those handwritten cards like I’ve got time, like I’m not already in trouble. The front tables have what you expect, the names you already know, stacked like they’re supposed to be the answer. Fine. But you drift, just a few steps, and it thins out into something else. Books that don’t introduce themselves, don’t ask for it. You pull one, read a line, check the price like it matters, put it back, stand there for a second, then reach for it again, like you’re arguing with yourself in public and nobody’s stopping you. Staff just lets you exist. No hovering, no script. You ask something, they answer straight, then they leave you alone. And the stamp. They were stamping the MI Bookhop sheets, and most places kept it safe. This one didn’t. It caught me off guard in a way that made me laugh, then immediately look around like, did anyone else get this? It felt like something that wasn’t supposed to be as funny as it was. I left with two books I didn’t see anywhere else today and that’s exactly what you want out of a curated assortment.
